Urea dissolves keratin, and so softens and moisturizes skin.A dermatologist may recommend urea ointment to dissolve damaged or diseased nails, or to soften skin in psoriasis, eczema, or keratosis.

I've tried one name-brand and two generic prescription urea/lactic acid ointments. These have a slightly higher urea concentration (50%) and add lactic acid (which you can also buy separately over-the-counter). One of the generics was lumpy and clogged the tube's nozzle; the other generic dried quickly to a white power without providing any benefit. The name-brand ointment worked well, but at $90 for 1.5oz is prohibitively expensive.

Topix Urix is an odorless, creamy formulation that (for me, anyway) has the same skin-softening performance as the prescription ointments but at a price less than my prescription co-pay. It is not greasy and is absorbed quickly. If a urea ointment is appropriate for your skin condition, this is a great product.
