(More customer reviews)I'm a medium-dark olive complected Latina. So, though I saw these raved about online, I wasn't about to dish out this much moolah per tube of gloss unless I could test the colors. I suspected most would be too light for my strongly pigmented plummy-brown lips.
While I had hoped Lush or Origami and Verse would have worked out nicely for me, they were too light, though these two pinks and the bronzey beiges would be stunning on gals of medium to light skin tones. Lush is a warm pink--so beautiful. Origami is a cool sorta baby-barbie pink. Blondes with coolskin tone would look killer with Origami. Warmer toned fair gals would rock Lush. Verse is a great nude ifyour lips aren't too darkly pigmented.
Now, what looked great on me, an NC 42 to NC44 in MAC colors: Primal and Nectar.
Nectar was my fave when I first saw online pics of these. I have really been glomming corals for the first time in my life this past year. I'm a gloss addict, and I have tons of MAC lipglasses and lustreglasses and dazzleglasses, as well as the gorgeous NARS glosses, Kevyn Aucoin glosses, Zoya Hot lips, and drugstore brand glosses. I always gloss, even when I wear regular opaque lipsticks. I gotta shine! These Hourglass glosses are some of the best ones I've tried in terms of how it goes on totally without streaking, stays on with a lovely shine and clarity (as if some wonderfu fruit juice is coating your lips in total evenness). Nectar, the coral-pinkish one, is so feminine and perfect for summer. It's got a bit of clarity/sheerness, so while you get color, it's like this lake of color on your lips that still shows off your lips somehow. Hard to explain, but lovely.
PRIMAL is an amazing color for darker ladies. It looks very dark berry-plummy in the tube, but goes on with a bit of light/sheerness and is soooooo flattering.
Now, in terms of application (a nice brush, not doe-foot), evenness of color, high shine without glitter (for those who hate glitter), and in terms of beauty of color, these get very very high marks.
What I didn't like (but others might not mind): 1. the smell. It has a coconutty smell, and it's very strong. I could do with a minimal scent or neutral scent. This is very strong. Like vanilla-coconut.2. The price. Ouch. You can get two MAC lipglasses for the price of one of these. 28 bucks for gloss is in that same range as NARS and Kevyn Aucoin. Ouchie. But this is beautifull, and maybe you wanna splurge on one or two for special days.
I would love to buy these again, but I may just enjoy the two I got until they get used up and call it a day due to the price. But I really like NECTAR and PRIMAL.
